How do you stop your dog from choking on a toy?
I was hoping someone could tell me how to prevent a dog from choking on a toy.
If they pull on a toy that can be put in their mouth, they can choke on it. If the toy contains a treat or requires them to hold on to it, they are less likely to become entangled.
I have two small dogs (5-month-old Shih Tzus) and one large dog (6-month-old Lab mix), and I’ve had them choke on Kongs, stuffed animals, and the occasional “dinner” bone.
If a larger dog chokes and there is no way out, we use the Heimlich maneuver. We don’t use it for the smaller dogs because there is almost always an open room.
I’ve found that getting them to swallow the toy is the best method for them. It takes a bit of work for them to spit it back out. Some dogs are given more work than others. I’ve also discovered that getting them to swallow the toy rather than trying to get it out of their mouth is sometimes easier. I believe making sure the dog has an open door is the key. They need an exit if they are snoring or making a choking noise, or they will choke on something.
I’ve found that putting a dab of peanut butter or honey in the middle and having them lick it works well for me. If there’s a speck of peanut butter or honey in their mouth, they usually lick it off and swallow it. They don’t usually gag or gag on it.
Another thing I do with stuffed toys for dogs is to put them in a bowl with a little water or milk in it. When they do manage to choke on it, the water or milk tends to move the toy around in their mouth, causing it to slide back in.
When it comes to getting the toy back out of their mouth, I’ve found that a little bit of luck and patience goes a long way.
This is a photo of a dollar store toy that I use as a choking toy for both of my dogs. I simply spread a small amount of peanut butter in the middle and let them lick it up.
In my opinion, there isn’t a “best” way to stop a dog from choking on a toy. The best way to ensure they are getting all of the nutrients they require while avoiding choking is to ensure they are not making a choking noise. That worked for me, and I believe it will work for most dogs who choke on toys.
I recently acquired a dog. He’s a large bully dog (I think he’s a Chow/Terrier mix). He’s 6 months old and weighs 40 pounds.
I had to remove the toy from his mouth because he had become tangled in it. Another toy that I intend to use as a choke toy is one that I have. He’ll have to deal with everything.
He’s a good boy who won’t choke on a toy unless it’s already in his mouth. It took me a while to get it out of his mouth and put it away, but it isn’t choking him. The only other thing I’ve seen him do is try to choke on his nose. He chokes on bones because he’s a bully, but that’s not his fault.
My dog is a Shih Tzu (I think). He has no trouble chomping and chewing on things when he wants to play with them. When he wants to play with something else, however, he will occasionally grab the toy’s other end and choke on it. He only chokes when he wants to play, not eat or drink.
My husband gave me a stuffed dog that he had. In his opinion, it was cute. I’m not sure if it was a good present or not, but he always gave it to me whenever I had visitors. So, when the company came to town, I told him, “Look, I’ve got a new toy.” It was a dollar store find! “
He looks at me as if I just told him I got it at Walmart. He remarked, “Is that a dog?” “That isn’t a toy at all. “
Anyway, I was home alone about a week later, and I was thinking that he probably gave me the stuffed dog because he saw the one I had and asked him to buy me one. I asked that he bring me something for my own home. As a result, I went to a dollar store. There was, in fact, a dog, but it was blue. I kept my mouth shut around him. But I specifically requested a yellow dog, and that is exactly what I received.
He was furious when he saw it, so I told him I bought it for myself. I also told him that the dog was the same one I had been using in the previous residence. I’d never taken it out of the closet and given it to him. It didn’t matter to me, I told him, because that’s what I wanted. That’s exactly what I got.
So he took it out of the closet when I was home alone again, and he had to show me how to use it.
I had it hung up, so when he put it to me, he said, “You’ll be safe with this here.” However, I do not want you to mess around with this one. “
I knew better than to argue with him. I took it out of the closet and placed it on the floor with the dog.
